1891- Basketball was made up by James Naismith. The game was played by YMCA students with a soccer ball and buckets.
1892- Lew Allen makes circular baskets to replace the peach baskets that were originally used.
1894- Basketballs are used instead of soccer balls.
1895- The first women's basketball game is played publicly.
1895- Backboards were introduced so that the fans in the stands would not get hit with the ball.
1896- The first intercollegiate women's basketball game is played.
November 7, 1986- The first known professional basketball game was played. It was played in Trenton, New Jersey. It was Trenton YMCA vs. Brooklyn YMCA. Trenton won 15-1. With this game, Fred Cooper became the highest paid player, he earned 16 dollars.
1898- The National Basketball League (NBL) was made up of six teams.
1899- The first Women's Basketball Rules Committee was made.
1901- Colleges began to sponsor the teams. Also in 1901, Yale won the first National College Championship.
1902- New England Basketball League (NEBL) let the first African American player play. Bucky Lew was the first African American player to play professional basketball.
1910- Intercollegiate Athletics Association (IAA) was started.
1918- SPHA (South Philadelphia Hebrew Association) was made.
1923- The first Women's Division of the National Amateur Athletics Federation (NAAF)
1925- American Basketball League (ABL) was started.
1926- AAU sponsors the first championship game ever for women's.
1931- The American Basketball League was discontinued.  
1932- The half court line was made to stop players from stalling.
1933-34- The American Basketball League continued to play.
1946-47- The Basketball Association of America (BAA) starts competitive play. There are 11 teams that compete in this league.
1949- The National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America join to become the National Basketball Association (NBA). This league is made up of 17 teams, and three divisions.
1953- The American Basketball League is discontinued again.
1953- The USA women's team grabs the Gold medal at the first World Championship.
1955- The United States women's team gets Gold at the Pan America Games.
1960- The Minnesota Lakers move to the West Coast to become the Los Angeles Lakers. They are the first team to move out west.
1961- The American Basketball League begins playing again, this time; they introduce the three-point shot.
1963- The ABL discontinues.
1967-68- George Mikan becomes the first commissioner of the just-started American Basketball Association (ABA).
1969- The First National Invitational Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament is held in Pennsylvania.
1971- Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) is started.
1976- The ABA gets stopped, the NBA picks up the four remaining teams.
1976- The USA women's basketball team plays in the Olympics.
1978- The Women's Pro Basketball League was formed with eight teams.
1992- The "Dream Team" is made for the players to go to the Olympics. This team consists of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson.
1995- The NBA expands their range into Canada. This adds two more teams to the NBA
1997- The WNBA is started.
1999- The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame opens. This is located in Knoxville, Tennessee.
